I was standing on the shore of the Indian River in Titusville, just across the river from the Kennedy Space Shuttle the morning of the first space shuttle launch. I had been there the day before, when they got down to seconds to go, and cancelled and started over again. I was working about 40 miles west of there. I was probably late for work those mornings, not that anyone would notice.
In all I watched a dozen or more launches, and one landing. An amazing time in history.
I would say that would be exciting to see once. Wait till you see my coming posts for Christmas and what we did for our windows...….
ReplyDeleteI will be looking for it.
DeleteDid you see any that went horribly wrong?
ReplyDeleteWhen the Challenger exploded, I was working in Orlando, talking on the phone with a client who was watching the launch out of his office window, he suddenly said, "that is not right, I have to call you back" and dropped the phone. If I hadn't been talking with him on the phone, I would have been out front watching.
DeleteThat would have been amazing to see. I camped out on the shores of the Indian River in 1973 across from the launch pad. Nothing was happening.
ReplyDeleteIn Titusville, or the campground south of town? We started wintering in Titusville in November of 1973 - in a condo right on the river - Washington Arms Club.
DeleteIn Titusville, on an expanse of grass where I don't think camping was actually expected. We were across from a little dock area where there was shrimping going on and we grilled little shrimp for dinner that night and slept under the stars.
DeleteSounds like up near the pier and the old swing bridge.
Deleteyou lucky person; you witnessed history.
ReplyDeleteWe all have,
