Venetian Police Station
The last day we were in Venice we took the water bus back to the train station. We ended up on the long route, but we were not in a hurry. We went out across the lagoon, through the cruise terminal and back into the city, going past the city police station. I wonder if there are other cities that use police boats instead of police cars? I have often suggested that the DC Metro Transit Police get rid of most of their cars and put the officers in the stations and on the trains.

I apologize in advance if you already know this, but all of Donna Leon's mysteries are set in Venice, and the police are always getting around in boats. Her Commissario Guido Brunetti is one of my all-time favorite detectives in fiction, and her books are loaded with both fascinating, inside information about Venice and mouthwatering descriptions of food, especially the simple meals Brunetti's wife prepares at home. The mysteries are pretty darn good too.
ReplyDeleteI have read a couple of travel or expat narratives written in Venice, I am not a big fiction reader.
DeleteLaurent instantly recognized the station.
ReplyDeleteNeat city, a bit crowded in summer, and a bit expensive. I am so glad we went.
DeleteI like the idea of cops on boats! I don't know a thing about Venice. Do they have firemen on boats, too?
