Travel Tuesdays: The Hirshhorn Museum of Modern Art

Most people either love or hate the Hirshhorn Museum here in Washington DC.  The building is a striking circle, open in the center, with circular galleries. I fell in love with the building the first time I saw it. Over the past year, the galleries have been gutted and redone. The result is that they are much more open than they had been the past few years, really showing the circular architecture.  The current shows are selections from the permanent collection, and street art, bright colorful, imaginative.
The Banksy exhibit was very limited in time, and only two small pieces of his work were included in a small subterranean gallery.  The lower level and sculpture garden are undergoing a massive remodel, when finished you will be able to pass under the street and into the sculpture gallery on the lower level (why it was never done this way, I have no idea.) There will also be a much needed elevator to the street.

  6. Wow...what a collection in one place! I have a poetry book, "Life Doesn't Frighten Me at All," with the poem written by Maya Angelou and illustrations by Jean-Michel Basquiat. I used it for a writing lesson back in the teaching days. I have been a Basquiat fan ever since seeing his work in that book.

  7. Wow, what a brilliant exhibit. It looks wonderful. I think my favorite piece is that blue and salmon colored painting (third from bottom). Walking into that gallery must have been stimulating.
p.s. Your comment on my site about Crystal Bridges made me smile. I would never have thought to travel to Arkansas but after seeing the exhibit at the Heard, I looked at their website and even plotted a way to get there. (In warmer weather, of course.)

    2. Never mind Banksy, Basquiat was smoking hot and his art quite interesting.

  9. I too have never heard of this museum; hey! I learned something! Over the years I have grown more found of modern art. I used to dislike it but now it challenges me to think and react more than to tradtional/older styles. which I appreciate.
