The Sunday Five: Public Transportation

1: Is there local public bus service available where you live?

2: Is there subway (underground) train service where you live?

3: Is there taxi service available where you live?

4: Can you walk to grocery shopping from where you live?

5: When was the last time you used public transportation?

My Answers:

1: Is there local public bus service available where you live? Yes, but I almost never use it.

2: Is there subway (underground) train service where you live? 10 minute walk away.

3: Is there taxi service available where you live? Yes, good service.

4: Can you walk to grocery shopping from where you live? There are two specialty markets that are walkable. Not really the kind of a general grocery store I would like to be near.

5: When was the last time you used public transportation?  Yesterday.

Please share your answers in the comments.

  1. 1. No buses but a constant parade of trams, street cars.
    2. There will be next year.
    3. Yes, although taxis are rarer since Uber and my preferred Didi appeared.
    4. Yes, while there have always been a convenience store somewhere nearby, a proper supermarket opened a month or so ago.
    5. Today, and it was not a good experience, though it normally is.

  2. 1. Yes.
    2. Technically no. Light rail only, but at one point it goes under some buildings.
    3. I assume downtown there is of some kind
    4. No. Allegedly in a year a new one will come where that would be possible.
    5. Yesterday.

    1. I would consider the light rail, the equivalent of a subway. We haven't ridden the Rapid in years.

  3. 1: Is there local public bus service available where you live? Not really; buses for travel to Columbia but no bus service in Camden.
2: Is there subway (underground) train service where you live? Oh gosh no.
3: Is there taxi service available where you live? Camden does have a taxi company; two cars I believe <<<<joke.
4: Can you walk to grocery shopping from where you live? It'd be a hike, but I could and I don't.
5: When was the last time you used public transportation? On a weekend away in Savannah last month.

  4. 1: Is there local public bus service available where you live? Yes. The RTA is THE public transportation service for the Dayton area.
2: Is there subway (underground) train service where you live? No.
3: Is there taxi service available where you live? There is, it's a very small service - mainly from the airport. If a person wants to take a taxi, he or she must call to arrange the pick up. Uber and Lyft are easier than calling a taxi .
4: Can you walk to grocery shopping from where you live? Yes.
5: When was the last time you used public transportation? In early June, a bus in St. Louis.

  7. 1. Yes. There is a bus stop about a block away. It was a consideration in choosing to live here.
    2. A Light Rail station is about a mile away.
    3. I was surprised to see a taxi in the neighborhood the other day. Usually they are at the airport and the big hotels downtown.
    4. If you count the grocery section at Target, about a half of a mile away, yes. There are also two small fami,y owned markets within walking distance- one high end and the other low end. Before the reconfiguration of the freeway, there was a huge Farmer's Market underneath the freeway viaduct every Sunday morning.
    5. June 28th, the last day of work before I retired. Once my caregiver duties dwindle, I may start taking the bus to the gym.

    1. I use the subway less than I did when I was working, but I still use it if I am going into the City or areas where tragic and parking are difficult.

  8. In PHX one drives everywhere. The bus service means standing out of doors in the heat. The Metro is there; hopefully used.

  10. The CDTA (Capital Ditsrict Transporatation Authority) is the local public bus service here...it's a pretty extensive network, but doesn't come out my way.

We have no subway (underground) train service here.

We have taxis, ubers, and lyfts here.

We can walk to a small convenience shop on the corner that has a deli and some limited grocery staples. Good in a pinch for necessities like eggs, milk, and deli meats.

We used the subway in NYC in January, and we used shuttle services at the airport in March. I am not a fan of taking buses if I can avoid it.

    1. There is an amazing part of rural America. I am hoping self driving cars will bring transit to rural areas first, where it is most needed.
