It's an incredible building. I haven't been inside for years. All I can picture is the Act Up die-in of 1989. Still, I always take a picture of the exterior. I have one I'll be sharing, too.
I am sure that when this admirable cathedral was first built in the 1870's, it soared above the city. It's kind of sad now to see it hemmed in by skyscrapers.
The original St. Patrick's Basilica is in Lower Manhattan in the NoLita neighborhood. It's a pretty church, no where near the size of the Fifth Ave. St. Patrick's, and close to the Little Italy bakeries to get a cannoli after exploring the neighborhood .
I hd been there once before, when the outside was clad in scaffolding, and a wedding was taking place. I visited twice on this trip and had a nice walk about. The hotel we stayed in was only 2-3 blocks away.

DeleteThe AIDS protests are what I always think of in regard to that cathedral too.
