The Sunday Five: A little Renovation

We are still trying to make plans for a kitchen replacement. The joys

1: Have you ever moved into a new house?

2: Have you lived through a major renovation?

3: If you could change one thing about your current home, what would it be?

4: If money was unlimited, how large of a home would you buy?

5: Any great family stories of homes in past?

My answers:

1: Have you ever moved into a new house? Three times, I worked in the business I built two of them.

2: Have you lived through a major renovation? Both bathrooms in the condo

3: If you could change one thing about your current home, what would it be?  Well there is that kitchen

4: If money was unlimited, how large of a home would you buy?  Maybe 2,000 sq. ft., having offices would be nice. Anything larger is just more to clean and maintain.

5: Any great family stories of homes in past? In 1977 my grandmother moved to a home on the east coast of Florida, and remarked that it was the forth home she had owned, and the first one with an indoor toilet when she bought it.

Please share your answers in the comments.

    1. No new house.
    2. Yes, more than once. I doubt I will again.
    3. Have a terrace rather than a balcony.
    4. If there was enough money to pay staff for the house, huge.
    5. The second house our family lived in had an outdoor toilet, with a pan that had to be emptied into a hole dug into the ground. My mother came running from the toilet with her clothes in disarray screaming snake. A snake had decided the toilet pan was a good place to hang out.

  2. 1. Brand spanking unlived in new house? Once. So new they used our garage as an office to sell the rest of the houses in the cul du sac.
    2. Yep. Two bathrooms and replacing carpet with wood in the rest of the house.
    3. Exchanging carpet for tile in the master bathroom. Who puts carpet in a bathroom?
    4. There isn't enough money in the world to make me go through house buying hell again. Four times is more than enough. I'd just put in a pool and hire six to ten pool boys to objectify.
    5. Too many to put here.

    1. Pool boys, we know someone who can help with the interviews, maybe promote some houseboys.

    2. That's the ticket! I'll need at least one houseboy to clean up the drool.

2: Have you lived through a major renovation? Yep
3: If you could change one thing about your current home, what would it be? Double the size
4: If money was unlimited, how large of a home would you buy? 4 bed, 3 full baths. Not huge.
5: Any great family stories of homes in past? Too many

    1. I think you have lived in as many homes, as I have owned cars

  4. Have you ever moved into a new house? No. I tend to like the old character.

Have you lived through a major renovation? Not a major. Just a bathroom or a kitchen.

If you could change one thing about your current home, what would it be? More updates to the bathroom.

If money was unlimited, how large of a home would you buy? A small 5-6 room bungalow. I don't understand large homes. The people I know with them use last than half the house. What's the point?

Any great family stories of homes in past? When I was very little Hurricane Agnes filled the lower level, a finished basement of a office, study, and family room of the house with 5'of water. One reason many old family history things and documents were lost.

    1. When I worked in the building biz in Florida, people would talk about these concrete lined holes in the ground, and all of the things they would do and store in them, and we would wonder "how do you do that in a swimming pool?" Sooner or later, they are all going to leak.

  5. 1: Have you ever moved into a new house? No, I like the feel of even a little history in a home.

2: Have you lived through a major renovation? A couple of bathrooms, though our kitchen is next.

3: If you could change one thing about your current home, what would it be? New flooring and new energy efficient windows.

4: If money was unlimited, how large of a home would you buy? Not large; three bedrooms is good, a couple of bathrooms. Our current home is a little larger than I like in square footage.

5: Any great family stories of homes in past? My sister set fire to the kitchen of my parents home as a child.

  6. 1. No. No new houses. Maybe if we designed and built one I would, but probably not some random new home.
    2. We've been through a few. Some we've done ourselves. Some we've hired out.
    3. Radiant floor heating in the bathrooms.
    4. A cool contemporary single story residence. I guess it could have a second floor for whomever occupied it next, but I'd try to stay single story. 3 bedrooms. 3.5 baths. And a nice kitchen. I do like our library.
    5. Great stories? Well, when cleaning out my mother's house, I got to toss the last family portrait into the dumpster. That was cathartic.

  7. 1: Have you ever moved into a new house? Yes, twice.

2: Have you lived through a major renovation? When I was growing up, it seemed like our house was always under renovation.

3: If you could change one thing about your current home, what would it be? New flooring.

4: If money was unlimited, how large of a home would you buy? About 1600 square feet.

5: Any great family stories of homes in past? Anybody heard of plaster laths? When I was about 14, my sisters and I spent the summer removing nails from the plaster laths pulled from the walls of our old house during one the renovations.

  8. 1: Have you ever moved into a new house? Dozens of times, as a renter and an owner. Nice to have stayed put for the last 10 years.

2: Have you lived through a major renovation? Yes...our kitchen. Almost killed me. Our basement was easier, because it wasn't being done in the middle of our living space.

3: If you could change one thing about your current home, what would it be? More privacy and/or more liberal neighborhood.

4: If money was unlimited, how large of a home would you buy? Not much larger than this, but definitely more modern.

5: Any great family stories of homes in past? Nope. My childhood wasn't great - we moved a lot into rentals in bad parts of town because we were poor, and my family's not very close. But I'm making up for it with a happy adulthood and marriage (health issues aside.)
