Travel Tuesday - More than Route 66

An early sitcom and theme song set Route 66 into the minds of the world, as the cross country route in the United States.  Tourists from around the globe come to drive the sections of the original route that still exist, though most of it has been replaced by modern limited access Interstate Highways.

The Lincoln Highway was another one, running from Times Square in New York City to San Francisco, we came across this marker for it in Carson City, Nevada, not far from the Nevada State Capitol building.

Then there is US Route 50, that ran from Ocean City Maryland to Sacramento California.  We kept driving sections of it in Nevada and California, it runs along the south shore of Lake Tahoe.  It also passes near where we live in the Washington DC area.

It might be fun someday, to take a month and drive the old roads, as much of them as still exist, from coast to coast.  Maybe something to do in retirement.

When I was young I thought it would be great to drive Route 66 and get my kicks. Gotta do these things when you are young.

    1. I understand there are some long cross country drives in Australia. There is some world travel that I want to do, while I am still young

  2. I had never heard of the Lincoln Highway and Route 50. It could be a fun expedition. Hit Route 66 in many parts of the west. Some charming. Most worth a miss.

    1. There is a lot of, Kansas out there. Friends of our drove from Oregon to Indiana a few years, every half hour or so there would be another FB post with the caption, oh look, more corn.

  4. I'd love to drive the old roads. I've never heard of the Lincoln Highway, though I used to live in Sacramento and remember taking 50 out to the foothills and always seeing the first sign that read Ocean City, MD 3,000 miles.

    1. 3,000 miles, if I could spread that over a month would be a nice drive.

  5. I've traveled different sections of route 66 many times. Some years ago I stayed in Williams Arizona before going to the Grand Canyon. It seemed like the whole city was a tribute to route 66.
p.s. I remember that observation deck at the Phoenix airport. I remember going there just to watch the planes land and take off.
