Foodie Friday - Eat Your Lawn
I don't understand the obsession with mown grass, with the "perfect lawn." People spend so much time and effort growing plants, that serve no real purpose. I ran across this recently, the side lawn of a huge house on the bluff overlooking the Potomac River in Alexandria, filled with edible plants. Tomatoes, squash, peppers, chard. There are some decoratives, flowers and such, but most of this is edibles. Gardening is a lot of work, but so is growing and mowing grass. Let's connect with where food comes from, let's grown things we can eat and enjoy.
I agree. While we don't grow any edibles but the blueberries in early summer...we have flowers. I don't get the grass obsession either. A neighbor here mows twice a week...it's nuts. I d rather have the nice gardens myself.
ReplyDeleteSlip in a few pepper plants next year - pretty plants and tasty fruits
DeleteLawns have become more and more impractical and wasteful. We had a lot of lawn at our house in Connecticut in the late 80s. I wonder what we would do if we had that house now.
ReplyDeleteI was glad to go to the condo and not have grass to maintain
DeleteWe have very little grass in the front yard because of so many trees, but are trying to turn it into a wildflower garden,
ReplyDeleteOut back we have a much larger patch of grass which is nice for the dog to race around on. We keep it nicely mowed but aren't fanatics about it, and because this is humid SC we rarely, and I mean almost never, water it. Mother Nature takes care of that part.
Plus the deer love to meander across the lawn...
Deer, you are growing something edible
DeleteHaving a purple thumb myself, grass is a lot easier to take care of. The last time I grew edibles, they fed the birds, squirrels and gophers. If Balder had his way, there'd be concrete everywhere. Probably because he does the mowing.
ReplyDeleteThe critters ate well
DeleteI totally agree. This little patch looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteThere was a code enforcement fight in Orlando a few years ago about tomato plants in a front yard.
DeleteThere are more and more articles coming out on the awfulness of a mowed lawn. Will people listen and try for other forms of lawn? food? flowers, natural?
