That is my mother at the left, my grandmother is next to her. I don't know who the lady in the blue dress and the man on the right are. The colorful cutouts of leaves on the wall, lead me to think fall, most likely Thanksgiving. I recognize the refrigerator behind my mother, it remained in the garage after the new house. There is a wringer washing machine in the background. Those were beasts to use. It must have been a special occasion, my mother had the candles lit. Possibly before I was born based on the location.
When were the candles lit in your house when you were growing up?
thanksgiving and xmess only for the candles.
ReplyDeletemy grandmom had a wringer washing machine like that. after my father installed an auto washer, my grandmom never looked back.
I see white bread, heinz ketchup, and tupperware salt/pepper shakers on the table. I can't see the year on the calendar above the washer.
and you look like your mom.
Amazing the cultural details in old photos
DeleteEvery time the power went out.
ReplyDeleteOther then the big ice storm in 68 or 69, I am trying to remember the power going out, not often.
DeleteMy grandmother used one of those wringer wash machines till the day she died in 1999. She refused a new washer and dryer...they just didn't cut the mustard. Then the laundry was line hung to dry.
ReplyDeleteSeems we always had candles lit for most holidays and Sunday din-din. Now I burn candles all the time...most nights look like a senace is going on.
My grandmother used one until they installed a larger septic tank, that was a memorable occasion.
DeleteOh my gosh, I don't remember candles at all. There probably were some but, I can't remember them. My grandmother had one of the wringer washers when I was just a little kid. I remember seeing her use it.
ReplyDeleteI think my mother had the same candles on the table at Christmas for at least 5 years.
DeleteThe decorated, blessed candle for Christmas Eve dinner. Slavic tradition.
ReplyDeleteWe should remember that one
Deleteonly at thanksgiving and christmas time. I love candles.
ReplyDeleteI light them all the time now much to the chagrin of Someone who fears I will burn down the house. One can always hope.
Caution is advised, unless you are a true pillager
DeleteWhat a priceless photo. When I was in college and sharing a house with four other guys, one of the housemates found an old ringer washing machine and brought it home. It was in perfect working order, and we used it for a couple of weeks until the novelty wore off. Then it was back to the laundromat.
ReplyDeleteMy aunt used one in the house on the lake, until city water came in. She said it did a better job in the hard well water.
DeleteThat picture is giving me a minor panic attack. It has a too closed in feel about it. My grandmother also had a wringer washer. It was fun to squish the clothes thru the wringer or watch the washer take steps. I only remember candles on birthday cakes.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the panic attack, I will try to do better
DeleteNo worries, it was minor :) I hope by trying to do better, you're not speaking of causing a major panic attack! You do fine, hon. Keep up the good work. Pip, pip and all that.
DeleteAside from your mother looking at the camera, it is not really a posed photo. Nice. The young Andrew used to love playing with a wringer washing machine when he got the chance.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea who they are looking at
DeleteOMG the washing machine!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love how your mom is rocking those glasses.
XOXO
She looked good there
