The Way We Were Wednesday - New York City

I have a handful of slides from a trip my parents took to New York in the mid 1950's.  This is one.  I suspect the colors have shifted over the decades,  but to some extent this captures the essence of New York in the industrial heyday of the post war era. Smoky, golden, vast.  Slightly before my time.  

 I was in my 50's before I went to New York for the first time. I had to be there to understand the essence and attraction of the place.

    I've only been in New York once, for a conference eleven years ago in 2009 (so I would have been 52 then). On a free afternoon, I went to the Brooklyn Museum to see Judy Chicago's "Dinner Party" art installation. I walked a bit around the immediate area as well -- past Prospect Park to the Brooklyn Library. I saw the big memorial intersection that I think had something to do with the Civil War maybe?

      I need to go to Brooklyn, one of my grandmother's uncles ran a bar just over the bridge, I have never been there.

    Once for a week. While we enjoyed it and it was good to tick off, we wouldn't go again. We found the heat and humidity hard going.

    the first time - 1968, 8th grade class trip. then off and on throughout the early/mid 70s. last time about 3 years ago to meet a knitting friend from the UK.

    Born there. Left for good in 1980. Back every year for a visit and that’s enough for me. The air is at least cleaner now. Amazing city, but not for me anymore.

    I've been several times, but the last was in early June, 1979. I took ten of my high school drama kids for a whirlwind 3-4 day theatre visit. The goal was to see as many productions as possible, sometimes two a day. One weird memory was when we were on the subway. One of my kids, a gorgeous senior, lost a contact lense. You’ve never seen so many guys in that car scramble to offer assistance. If I had lost one of my contacts, someone would have just stepped on it!

    Spent many years near and lifetime career in Manhattan at a time when the air was electric with creativity, progress and the hardy. No city quite like it... very glib and savvy cab drivers versed on so many topics. Saw that Judy Chicago exhibit; a grand eye opener. NYC today
    is heart-wrenching thanks to the nuts let out of their shells.....
