My Music Monday - Memorial Day in the USA - Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man - BBC Proms 2012

It is Memorial Day in the United States. I was overcome by emotion when I visited the American Military Cemetery in Normandy. I have written about this before.  We need to learn from the past, or we are doomed to repeat the agony of those who have gone before us.  Nationalism, isolationism, and racism are the antipathy of a peaceful and civilized world.

  1. Such a powerful work! Sadly, I think we're doomed to repeat the agony... as we continue to do.

So many of our war fodder were just kids really, that is teenagers. One can't help but cry for them.

    1. I think every politician, and every military commander should make a detailed tour of military cemeteries before making any decisions.

  5. Beautiful! I think every American should be required to do national service. If they have flat feet, or whatever was Trump's excuse, then they work at a non-combat type job--men and women should do this!

    1. Something that takes them outside their comfort zone. About 15 years ago a took a privileged college student from the a top ranked school, into Appalachia for couple of days of clinic work. It changed his life, he had never seen rural poverty, he thought broken education systems were part of urban decay. The last I knew he was doing rural development work in impoverished parts of Alabama.
