There were three apple trees on the farm, a very old tree in the front yard of the 100 year old farm house, it was so tall, that you had to wait for the apples to fall, you couldn't reach them from the ground, one in my grandfather's dog run, the apples on that tree were late to ripen, often green - hard and sour, and on behind the honey-processing plant. The honey-house apples were the best, nice size, ripened well, the tree was short and full, easy to get to. In my teenage years I picked dozens of bushels of apples from that tree. My grandmother taught me how to make and can applesauce, and how to make a good apple pie (I have since learned the secret to making a GREAT apple pie.
When was the last time you went apple picking?
There was an apple tree where I grew up. I picked one once, tasted it and spat the sour flesh from my mouth. I've never picked an apple since.
ReplyDeleteI don't like sour apples.
DeleteI have never been apple picking. my late MIL used to make applesauce every fall with fruit from a nearby orchard. commercial applesauce is crap compared to hers.
ReplyDeleteApple sauce is easy to make
DeleteWe lived in Santa Barbara at the time, around 2005, and I think it was in Los Olivos that we went apple picking. They were SO good. SG made apple pies and apple sauce. Delicious! Actually, that was the ONLY time I ever went apple picking.
ReplyDeleteThere are wonderful orchards in Normandy, a day or so's drive from you.
DeletePicked an apple from my backyard tree. Cut it open, found a worm. I don't like green apples anyway. Never picked another one. Didn't have that problem with avocado trees!
ReplyDeleteTo quote Michael, One Bad Apple Don't Spoil the Whole Bunch
DeleteI do believe that was Donny Osmond, and I wasn't going to bother with green apples! Now if it were grapes, that's a whole different story! We battled caterpillars on our grapevine growing up. Little green wormy things were just plucked and tossed. You can't spoil a grape. Sheesh, now I'm hungry.
DeleteYour right, and I had that album, bought it with my first "stereo system" in the early 70's
DeleteThe last time I went apple picking? Never! Unless you count picking them out of the produce section at the grocery store!
ReplyDeleteHow most of it is done these days.
DeleteI used to go every year when I lived in Chicago - which was 2000. no picking in 20 years !
