When planning the trip to Ireland, nearly everyone that I talked to that had been there, said, "you need to rent a car." Then I stumbled across the Mount Juliet Estate Hotel and it was far enough off the beaten path that driving was the only practical way to get there. The challenge being that the Irish drive on the opposite side of the road from the Americans.
I bought a micro-USB card for Ms Garmin, and gave J permission to give me explicit driving directions, especially reminding me what lane to turn into. Leaving Galway was easy, mostly one way streets. Occasionally J shouted at me, saving us from embarrassment or disaster. I returned the car without a scratch on it. Always buy all of the insurance the rental car company offers when renting a car in a foreign country.
So this week questions about driving.
- Have you driven on the opposite side of the road?
- Do you pay attention to the gas mileage on your car?
- Have you driven over 100 miles per hour (161 kh/h)?
- Has Ms Garmin (GPS, or Sat Nav) ever given you wrong directions?
- What is your fantasy dream car?
My answers:
- Have you driven on the opposite side of the road? Twice, the first time was in London in 1990.
- Do you pay attention to the gas mileage on your car? Not really, I watch the range, but really don't pay attention to fuel consumption.
- Have you driven over 100 miles per hour (161 kh/h)? Yes, legally.
- Has Ms Garmin (GPS, or Sat Nav) ever given you wrong directions? Let me put it this way, I had to turn around next to a sheep barn.
- What is your fantasy dream car? A classic Rolls Royce.

Well....this will be short. No to all of them. And i only ever look at the gin gauge dear.
ReplyDeleteMy dream car would be a vintage French Citroen. My grandfather had one. The only one i ever saw here...in PA anyway. I love those cars.
And a guy here in New Hope as a Rolls Royce. He's quite a campy queen too.
ReplyDeleteI would be too!
Delete1. No. I would have when I was younger but not now.
ReplyDelete2. Frequently and often, especially as our fuel costs so much more than yours.
3. 96 mph when I was 19. Very dangerous but I can't recall if we had speed limits on open roads then.
4. "The girlie" has at times done wrong by us, but not seriously.
5. This one. https://fatllama.com/rentals/potters-bar/hire-rover-p5b-coupe-35-litre-1969-03083638 For ten years I owned one like this, a Humber Super Snipe https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/-/24087530 A poor man's Jaguar.
I had never heard of Humber, looks like luxory.
DeleteIt did have a woodgrain dashboard and door sills, and woodgrain picnic tables and a cigarette lighter in the rear, along with reading lamps. It was quite powerful but handled like a row boat. It was at its best on an open road at high speed but it also guzzled the juice.
DeleteHave you driven on the opposite side of the road? Never. The idea terrifies me.
ReplyDeleteDo you pay attention to the gas mileage on your car? Yes. And having a Prius, I really enjoy that.
Have you driven over 100 miles per hour (161 kh/h)? Never. I think I may have hit 90, but maybe not even that high.
Has Ms Garmin (GPS, or Sat Nav) ever given you wrong directions? We have one know we called Dora the Explorer until she screwed up so many times we began calling her Ditzy Dora.
What is your fantasy dream car? I don't have one. When I was in high school, I wanted a little orange and black Porsche. Now, all I want is a cute, reliable hybrid.
It is never too late to live out those high school fantasies, well at least some of them, Porsche now offers a hybrid (so does Ferrari)https://www.kbb.com/porsche/panamera/ . When you take delivery in Germany, there are sections of the autobahn with no or very high speed limits (that is how I have driven 108 miles per hour legally.).
DeleteHave you driven on the opposite side of the road? Not because I wassuppsoed to ...
ReplyDeleteDo you pay attention to the gas mileage on your car? I do, like a fiend, because the info is always RIGHT there.
Have you driven over 100 miles per hour (161 kh/h)? Yes, shortly after buying anew car I found a stretch of old, out of the way highway, and floored it... at just 100, I let off the gas. Once and only once.
Has Ms Garmin (GPS, or Sat Nav) ever given you wrong directions? I am a GPS-less driver. Carlos, on the other hand, nearly always gives wrong directions.
What is your fantasy dream car? Audi Convertible ... or if I REALLY hit it big, a Maybach.
The first time I hit 100 miles per hour, was with a nearly new Accord, on a lonely stretch of expressway, letting off when I passed that magic mark. I have seen the Maybach assembly line, the S class is built on the same line.
DeleteNO to all 4.
ReplyDelete#5 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1j-ntxzjsQ. my grandfather had one. I got to drive it after I received my license. that's when america made REAL cars!
PS - I like the second pix of jay and the irish countryside.
DeleteThanks! I have a few nice pics from that trip. A shoebox Chevy from the mid 50's - they have a lot of fans.
Deletethe trunk could hold several bodies. going on vacation with my grandparents was a treat.
Delete1) No, and if you were in the car you'd die of nervous exhaustion, so I likely never will.
ReplyDelete2) No (and somewhere my mother is not forgiving me for that)
3) Twice that I can recall: once in Louisiana (illegally) and a few times in Germany (legally), both in brad new cars.
4) Does the time she showed us parked in the English Channel count?
5) Mercedes AMG-GT: https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicles/class/amg-gt/roadster#Models
I don’t think there is enough Xanax for number 1
Delete1. Yes, not on purpose.
ReplyDelete2. No. That's what BH is for.
3. Yep. !979, brand new Impala Station wagon. You can't tell how fast you're going in one of those, especially on a long empty stretch of desert in Nevada.
4. Often. You can really tell when you already know where you're going and how to get there.
5. A convertible anything.
With the top down a convertible is very easy to get in and out of, your next car
DeleteHave you driven on the opposite side of the road? not intentionally
ReplyDeleteDo you pay attention to the gas mileage on your car? when I buy a vehicle this is one of my first questions: the mpg.
Have you driven over 100 miles per hour (161 kh/h)? - no
