The Way We Were Wednesdays - Angus Stamp and Coins
When I was about ten years old I started collecting coins. My parents gave me a couple of Whitman Coin Albums for Christmas one year, I figured out that older coins were more valuable than shiny new ones, and that coins are wonderful little pieces of sculpture.
When we started spending winters in Titusville, Florida there was a shopping mall between the High School and the condo. The mall had a coin shop and a camera shop. I was in heaven. The coin shop was owned by an older couple, kind of their retirement project. Her name was Ann, his was Gus, the shop was Angus Stamp and Coin, combining their names. I am not very good at remembering names, but this simple mnemonic worked, and 45 years later I remember their names.
This is a scan of a slide I took, with the first 35mm SLR that I bought at the camera shop in the mall. I was in heaven.
Are you good at remembering names?
I've never thought of coins as sculptures, but they are. I like the photo. My partner is excellent at celebrity spotting but never knows their names. Even if I miss seeing them, I can usually come up with the name after asking him a few questions.
ReplyDeleteI had a co-worker for four years, never could remember her name, she would look at me and say, "Leslie"
DeleteYes. When I meet someone and say there new. It's nice to meet you David, I then repeat the name in my head three times to myself. It usually works.
ReplyDeleteI am more likely to remember your shoes size.
DeleteNaughty boy!!!!!!!!
DeleteAt times. I would remember Angus. I had a penny collection when I was very young. I actually filled all three books. Those old coins weren’t so hard to find in the late ‘50s. I then I played poker with some nigh other d kids. I thought my mother would kill me...but she didn’t go after the kids. I’ve hated poker ever since.
ReplyDeleteI still have the pennies, the last time I moved them, about 300 pounds of them.
Deleteusually yes, remembering names is easy. what's yours again? clarence?
ReplyDeleteI am like an old dog, I will answer to anything as long as it is said in a kind tone of voice.
DeleteI'm terrible at remembering names and getting worse with age. But I remember faces if I've seen them a lot.
ReplyDeleteSomeday I will tell my most infamous story about forgetting a name, Mrs. SW2-25, I still remember her job number.
DeleteIt depends. I usta cud 'member names until the Depends ;) Kidding, they don't come in my size. Seriously, my once very sharp memory for names, faces and words seems to be slowly slipping away but past events and trivial things remain kind of sharp.
ReplyDeleteBalder Half had an old coin collection when he was a kid. He came home one day and found that his baby sister had spent most of it on candy. Now he just collects gadgets.
I always enjoyed getting change after someone's sister splurged on candy.
