If I am lucky, I will live to a nice old age. At 20, that meant 50, at 30 it meant 60, at 60 it might have been 75, at my age it is 85. That end date, is harder to move as I get older. As one blogger has put it, I have more yesterdays and than tomorrows. I am a realist, I am unlikely to live much past my mid 80's, if I live that long. I think of this often, I calculate how many more years do I have to do whatever I want to do. And the number keeps getting smaller.
And I know, that at 80 or 85 I will look back on the "Good Old Days" and today will be one of those.
Yes I did some fun things in my 30's, brave things in my 40's and 50's. But honestly, my 60's have been pretty amazing. We have gone and done, and seen. I have a world of experiences and memories to look back on as the Good Old Days.
Don't put off having your "Good Old Days." Make that call, read that book, see that show, hear that concert, paint that picture, take that trip. Someday, the ability to do those things will end, and you will look back on today, this week, this month, this year, as the "Good Old Days." Fill those days with memories. Be the old person who starts every story with, "well there was this time when I . . . ". Have memories, not regrets. We regret more the things we didn't do, than the things we did.

Lovely thoughts, even if they are a bit grim.
ReplyDeleteMake those memories of the good old days.
DeleteYou never know when you will become ashes or fertiliser, or become infirm, so do it while you can, as you are doing, and I am in a more modest way.
ReplyDeleteWe each do as we can.
DeleteAll very true!
ReplyDeleteOld age sneaks up on us, if we are lucky enough to live long enough.
DeleteI don't know how true it is, but I have heard many live a couple years past what their parents did if they passed of natural causes that is. Might be true. All my mother's siblings lived about 5-8 years pass my grandparents passing on date. Granted my mother is the only one left...and she almost 10 year pass when my grandmother passed on. And my father lived about 9 years past his parents' passing on ages.
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather's died in their 70s, my grandmothers and my parents lived into their 80s.
DeleteMy mother passed at 69 while my father passed at 92. I'm planning on 100 or so.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed.
I will be deeply disappointed if I live to be 100.
DeleteHaving decent mental and physical health are pre-requisitites for living life as fully and happily as you are able to do.
ReplyDeleteAnd there are no guarantees
DeleteMy decade-ending birthday last month has been a kick in the seat of the pants to take on a new experience each month until my next birthday. Gotta get moving on this one before the month is over!
ReplyDeleteI would avoid bungy jumping.
DeleteI actually thought that my London trip in 2025 would be my last but here I am planning another one.
ReplyDeleteTravel while you can, and know that there is an end date. Returning from Greece there was a man sitting next to me, who had been on a cruise, he was struggling with his health and said, that is the last time I will do this.
DeleteI was just telling some friends the other day that I could die any time now and I wouldn't mind. I said, I'm not thinking about jumping off the roof. I just mean I have had a good life and when it's my time, then that's fine. They were saying, Oh no, well what about your children and grandchildren that would miss you? And I just thought, They will all be fine.
ReplyDeleteI so agree.
DeleteYes, we're going to die. I'm in no hurry.
ReplyDeleteWhile we are here, we might as well have some fun.
