A couple of weeks ago I took the subway into the city, to wander a couple of museums. At the National Portrait Gallery there is a show of the work of Grandma Moses. I was blown away, I have heard of her, but I had no idea what her work looked like.
My mother taught me about her when I was very young. My introduction to American Primitive, which I appreciate even more now. I would be in heaven at that exhibit. Lucky you!
I am not deceived by my first thought that these are childish and naive. They are seriously good and lovely works of art.
ReplyDeleteMy description of the style would be "primitive" or "folk art." That was a surprise, I always assumed that her work was much more fine arts.

DeleteThere are some very nice paintings here. The one with the fire really struck me. She turned all that damage and destruction into something beautiful.

DeleteOh goodness, those are great! I love the detail and color. She really painted a lot of terrific pictures!
ReplyDeleteA very unique style. I had a professor in undergrad who worked like this, his subject matter was Poland and Russia.
