The Sunday Five: Light at the End of the Tunnel

1: What are you looking forward to this year?

2: Where would you like to be in 5 years?

3: Do you think things are going to get better or worse?

4: What do you look forward to each day?

5: Is there a tunnel near you that you can walk or ride a bike through?

My answers:

1: What are you looking forward to this year? The grand adventure, a month of travel.

2: Where would you like to be in 5 years? Still moving around under my own power.

3: Do you think things are going to get better or worse? It is going to be a tough year, then it will get better.

4: What do you look forward to each day? Reading blogs and trading texts with a few special people.

5: Is there a tunnel near you that you can walk or ride a bike through? This is the Wilkes Street tunnel in old town Alexandria, it was built for trains when the waterfront was industrial, and converted to a pedestrian passage after the waterfront become million-dollar residential. It is about 1.5 miles from where we live. Wilkes, as in John Wilkes Booth the assassin of President Lincoln, his family lived in the area.

Please share your answers in the comments.

    2. I want to be exactly where I am now.
    3. For me and for the world, it hasn't been a great start to the year so far. I hope it gets better as moronic leaders pull in their horns.
    4. I look forward to the relaxation that comes with a pre dinner drink.
    5. Quite a few tunnels around here, and I walk through them at times. Thanks for the great train tunnel photo.

  3. 1: What are you looking forward to this year?
A nice summer that’s not too hot.
2: Where would you like to be in 5 years?
Exactly where I am now, geographically and physically.
3: Do you think things are going to get better or worse?
That depends on whether certain people have been ousted.
4: What do you look forward to each day?
Everything I do now, except for shopping.
5: Is there a tunnel near you that you can walk or ride a bike through?
Yes, in the underground of several local châteaux.

    1. Underground tunnels at chateaux sounds like a great place for aging local wines.

    2. There are hundreds of kilometres of tunnels storing and maturing wine in the region. Some were also used for refuge in times of war.

  4. 1: What are you looking forward to this year? Family holiday in Majorca. Hull City's possible but unlikely promotion to The Premier League. Not having toothache. Trump getting his ass kicked in the midterms.
2: Where would you like to be in 5 years? In The Land of the Living.
3: Do you think things are going to get better or worse? When you are 72 you are on the way downhill so of course - worse though I hope to approach the endgame stoically.
4: What do you look forward to each day? A pint mug of tea and a visit to the Wicked Hamster blog.
5: Is there a tunnel near you that you can walk or ride a bike through? Not close by but twelve miles away on The Monsal Trail there are old railway tunnels.

  5. 1. Our still mostly unplanned European trip in Sept and Oct.
    2. Vertical. Traveling.
    3. I haven't seen any evidence that things will get better. Even if "he" dies today, any repair to this world won't be in my lifetime.
    4. This question honestly stumped me. I just don't know that I do.
    5. No. There is a small one on a path on which I run, but it's about 9 miles into the run - and out and back for that would be 18 miles. I'm not doing that much currently.

5: Is there a tunnel near you that you can walk or ride a bike through? Not that I know of.

  7. Edmonton used to have a notorious traffic tunnel called "The Rat Hole." It was for cars ro go underneath the old railway yard in the city's downtown. It was narrow and dimly illuminated. People always put on the headlights and left-turn signals on their cars when driving through in order to make the centre evident in the two-way traffic flow as cars passed each other. Around 25 years ago, the discontinued train yard was sold to the City and developed as the housing area where I now live. The Rat Hole was demolished and a standard paved intersection was created where it used to be. Some Edmontonians now call that intersection "The Flat Rat."

    1. So you live near the flat rat, sounds like a rat that didn't get out of the way of traffic fast enough.

2: Where would you like to be in 5 years? Still breathing, retired and volunteering and having a good life.
3: Do you think things are going to get better or worse? I tend to remain positive, though it might be a struggle for awhile.

    1. About five or six blocks south of King street, it is in "Windmill" park, on Union Street, the west end of it is next to a charming older Safeway store.

  10. 1: What are you looking forward to this year? Thanks to the box tree moth, I just had 12 dead boxwoods removed and for this year that space is going to be an herb/vegetable/flower garden.
2: Where would you like to be in 5 years? I want to be alive, happy, and healthy with no signs of slipping into dementia (the family "curse" from the maternal side).
3: Do you think things are going to get better or worse? I always hope for good things to come, look for "the other side of the coin", and try to keep a positive attitude.
4: What do you look forward to each day? Reading blogs, planning the day's evening meal, (back in the day, I would have a weekly menu made up on Saturday, go grocery shopping on Sunday, and then follow that menu for the week. I like the flexibility of retirement.), taking my walks or going to yoga, doing what needs to be done around the house, talking with friends and neighbors.
5: Is there a tunnel near you that you can walk or ride a bike through? There's a pedestrian/bike tunnel that goes beneath a downtown street and a natural Osage Orange tunnel at one of the MetroParks. That's about it for here.

    5. There are several railroad underpasses in our immediate area, but no lengthy tunnels until you get down to the Thames. I have walked the Woolwich Tunnel beneath the Thames, which is a pedestrians-only footpath!
