This post was triggered by Sassybear commenting that he has NEVER taken a two week vacation, and he is getting close to retirement.
1: When was the last time you took a vacation (holiday for my international readers)?
2: What is the longest period of time you ever took off from work for a vacation?
3: Were there limits on how much time you could take off from work?
4: Did you ever take planned, extended, unpaid time off from work?
5: How do retired people take time off?
My Answers:
1: When was the last time you took a vacation (holiday for my international readers)? Last April-May, we took a month off, a complete change of pace, routine, and place.
2: What is the longest period of time you ever took off from work for a vacation? When I was working, about 2 1/2 weeks was the longest.
3: Were there limits on how much time you could take off from work? With the exception of the last couple of years when I supervisory responsibilities that limited me to 13 days away, there was no official limit, but being gone for more than 10 days was frowned on. I stretched that to a little over 2 weeks a couple of times.
4: Did you ever take planned, extended, unpaid time off from work? I love the concept of sabbatical - but never worked where that was offered. I did take four months off one fall - it was life changing.
5: How do retired people take time off? I think it is important to do a complete change of routine, we go away for a month. If we couldn't travel, I would order room service everyday for a week, let the laundry pile up. (The restaurant here at the condo delivers, just like room service in a hotel.)

5: How do retired people take time off? It’s a puzzlement.
One challenge we found with an academic calendar is it was hard to travel off season, such as Italy in February.
DeleteWe weren’t on an academic calendar. We simply had the equivalent time off. So, lots of vacation, personal days, holidays. Whenever we wanted to go. It was wonderful.

How do retired people take time off? I'm not retired, but I would say exactly what you said, break the routine and still take opportunity to get away.
Even a couple of days away can help.
Delete1: When was the last time you took a vacation (holiday for my international readers)? If short trips count, Carlos and I take weekend getaways about once a month to nearby areas ... Georgetown, Asheville, Atlanta. though we did have a nice long stretch in Savannah earlier in the year.
ReplyDelete2: What is the longest period of time you ever took off from work for a vacation? About six weeks years back, but it was part job interview and a big part road trip with taking a new car out for a good lo=ng spin.
3: Were there limits on how much time you could take off from work? Not really though more than two weeks makes me feel like a new person when I get back to work.
4: Did you ever take planned, extended, unpaid time off from work? Oh, yes, that long road trip, other than visiting the graves of my paternal grandparents in SoCal and then heading to Santa Fe for a job interview was utterly unplanned. I went where I felt I wanted to go.
5: How do retired people take time off? Get out of the retired routine and go.
We took a two week road trip the last time Sweet Bear bought a car, in Germany.

A good question to explore, the differences between retirement and a vacation.

The school calendar gives generous time off, the downside is the kids are out of school making places busy with families.
Delete1: When was the last time you took a vacation? Just last week we were on vacation, or PTO. I tend to prefer grouping PTO days with holidays for 3 to 5 day mini vacations each month. I also like to use my personal health days this time of year, if I haven't had to use them for illness, for mental health days.
ReplyDelete2: What is the longest period of time you ever took off from work for a vacation? When I was teaching we had a full 2 months off, but it never felt like a vacation because there were courses in training to complete. Generally you take 10 to 12 days for long vacations.

4: Did you ever take planned, extended, unpaid time off from work? NA
5: How do retired people take time off? We have entered the pre-retirement decade, and we are beginning to practice maximizing our time off. We have three 10-day vacations planned for 2026.
Going anyplace interesting next year?
