Saturday Morning Post: 50 States in 52 Weeks North Carolina

Duke Chapel

North Carolina is geographically at about the center of the east coast of the United States. It is physically a very diverse state, from the windswept Atlantic Coast, to the Appalachian mountains in the west. There are two major metropolitan areas, Charlotte, and the research triangle of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.  Home to two of the best Universities in the Country, UNC and Duke. Those two areas are filled with educated cultured people, surrounded by the deep south, in many ways still recovering from the civil war and desegregation.

Located just south of Virginia, North Carolina was often a drive through state for me, not stopping as I passed through.

Worth visiting, outside of the two real cities, I wouldn't want to live there.

  1. We almost moved to the research triangle in 2003. Chose Santa Barbara, CA, instead. I was in NC when I was 14. Never since.

  2. I like North Carolina, though I prefer the Asheville area and the Wilmington beaches. We go up quite a bit for a quick getaway.

  3. Ohio and North Carolina have a never-ending quarrel over bragging rights to the Wright Brothers and their accomplishments. The Wright Brothers did all their flight research in Dayton and test flights at Huffman Prairie. We are quite proud of our native sons.

  4. Well that's okay then because if North Carolina had a referendum I doubt that North Carolinians would want you and Hammy to move there.

    1. If the voter turn out was heavy in DRU, Charlotte and Asheville, we would probably be elected Kings of NC.

  6. It is a state of astonishing natural beauty, with the Atlantic beaches and barrier islands on one side and the mountains on the other. In Spring every plant and tree has a flower on it. A conservative and evangelical hotbed, with 2 word-class universities and several other outstanding ones (e.g. Wake Forest) and a massive Pride Parade in Charlotte. A sea of Republicans dotted with solidly Democratic strongholds... But OHIO was the birthplace if aviation!

  8. I have several ties to North Carlonia now it seems. My uncle just moved to Ashville in October. My cousins, his son and his wife just built a second home there, and my ex the boy toy is moving there to Charlotte. I was to Durham once. As Bette Davis would say- "What a DUMP."

    1. Durham is post industrial, with a major University. More steam punk than elegant.

  9. Born and raised in North Carolina. Went to Duke. Moved on. I prefer France, but not California. I also liked living in Illinois all those years ago.
