When people think of Nevada, they often think of Las Vegas, and Vegas was my first exposure to the Silver State. A conference I was speaking at had been scheduled for San Francisco, then the hotel workers at the Hilton went on strike, and the conference was moved at the last minute to the old Las Vegas Hilton (now long gone.)
I rather enjoyed it. Many of the conference attendees were horrified at being in sin city. I stayed over a couple of days after the conference, and flew on from there to participate in a symposium on post practice careers for lawyers at Stanford Law School.
The other couple of times I have been to Nevada, I flew into Reno. One trip I spoke at a conference in Reno, the other was a board meeting at Lake Tahoe. Twice I have driven from Reno to Lake Tahoe. The second time we arrived at Lake Tahoe the day after the first snowfall of the season. A magical place.
I always enjoyed Vegas, but I didn’t much like living there. No suprise that many people were obsessed with money and flash. I’ve never been to Tahoe and have heard it’s beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBoth were fun to visit, in very different ways.
DeleteI am not enticed to visit Nevada.
ReplyDeleteI would go back.
DeleteWe used to have family in Las Vegas and I loved visiting. Reno used to be so much smaller but it's growing. That's where the Harrah's Auto Collection is, or at least used to be; that's a great thing to see.
ReplyDeleteAnd Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful spots on earth. My family rented cabins up there for the summers, always on the California side, and it was great fun.
I saw Sammy Davis Jr at Caesars Tahoe when I was a kid and Dolly Parton when I was older.
We visited the Auto Museum on out last visit.
DeleteBack in one of the many iterations of my career, I worked for two months in Las Vegas and one month in Reno. In Vegas, instead of staying at a noisy hotel, we had apartments near the Las Vegas Country Club. It turned out that the cast of Cirque de Soleil was also living there. It was a little intimidating going to the pool with all those exceptionally fit bodies there at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThose exceptional bodies, would have loved to put cream and sugar in their coffee.
DeleteI remember visiting Las Vegas a long, long time ago. My best friend and I went out west for a long driving vacation and that was one of our stops. We saw Don Rickles for some reason that I don't remember now. I also remember getting so sun burned because it was SO hot!
ReplyDeleteThe husband of one of Sweet Bear's nieces, and a friend, turned left in Cleveland a couple of summers ago, and didn't stop until they were in Vegas. He did call his wife and let her know that he was helping a friend through a rough patch and would be back soon.
DeleteMy first stop in Nevada was Elko, then Reno, on to Lake Tahoe and crossed over the pass during a snowstorm. I've been to Las Vegas several times but, then, it's only about 4 hours from where we live in Arizona. If that's your photo of the gaming floor in a casino, that's a no-no. No photography allowed in a casino.
ReplyDeleteTravel Nice blog! Thanks for sharing.I m always looking for new.Plz post more.
ReplyDeleteI do hope they have the December conference in Lost Vegas. It sort of amusing for a few days to see all the shenanigans. Lord it is an expensive place these days.
