What About Work?

I know I am a little bit strange, among other things, I like work.  Work has not always been kind to me, but I feel kind of adrift without it.  Like many of us, my work, is a part of my identity as a person.  So let's explore our feelings about work shall we?

1: At work are you a lone-wolf or a team player?
2: Do you view "feedback" as useful guidance or needless meddling?
3: In a 15 second elevator conversation, how to do describe the work you do (or are retired from)?
4: Do you take scheduled breaks at work, or do you work through the day pausing only when you need to?
5: If you were 21 again, and Bill Gates offered to pay you to go to school for a new career, what would you do?

My Answers:
1: I am a lone wolf at work, I prefer to be left alone to get the job done.  I am not good at delegating.
2: Most feedback is useless meddling, tell me up front how you want it done and trust me to get it done.
3: I am attorney who does research and program development on issues in law and aging.
4: I work through the day, I usually eat lunch at my desk while working, breaks are as needed and as short as needed.
5: If I had known then, what I know now, I would have gone to Medical School.

  2. I don't work. I just sit about all day reading blogs. Do I get the job?

  3. 1: Team player; like Anne Marie we have a small business so we gotta do it together.

2: Depends on what is said and who says it; it can go either way.

3: I work for the local fine arts center, bringing art and music to the county.

    4: I take a lunch ... that's it.

5: I have done all sorts of things in my life, worked in all kinds of fields--I managed an art gallery, I worked in hospice care, I owned a small cafe, I was a guidance counselor at a school in California, I've done writing for our local papers, and more--so i think I'd tell Bill he could keep his money, or donate it to a good cause in my name.

  4. 1) Prefer a small team of two or three
    2) I want to know how I am doing and what I can do better
    3) I sell Real Estate therefore I must listen well and help guide my clients into the best decisions for themselves without making that decision for them. The most important part of my work that isn't obvious is building relationships and creating my own leads, growing my business only betters my clients choices and opportunities.
    4) Very unstructured therefore I must self discipline.
    5) I've worked in floral, healthcare, fitness, education as well as my current career. I've loved all of them and together the experiences make up who I am. Having said that if I were able to whisper into my own 21 years old ear back in the early 1980s I'd tell myself to stay in school, get a degree and go onto medical school. I've done well without a degree but I can honestly say not having one is a hurdle that isn't necessary to have.

  5. 1- At work in mostly a lone wolf, but have also been team player since some projects require more hands to get the job done. 2 feeback is required nor desired. If I get it I can take it. 3 I'm a Visual Stylist in a luxury department store. I'm the one who plans out the store layout, decor changes, mannequins, windows, and other displays around the store that hopefully suck you in. 4 we are required to take a hour lunch, and entitled to two paid breaks. I only ever take the morning break...out for a coffee and back. 5- I don't think id go back and change anything. I have always been in visual display and my degree is in interior design, and still do projects. I could never do any desk job, computer or research. I have to much creativity and energy. I could never sit all day.

    1. Lone wolf. In just about everything else as well.
    2. It depends on the delivery.
    3. I owned a graphic design business that I just sold to my partner. Not sure what my next move is.
    4. Break whenever I need or want to.
    5. Honestly, I wouldn't want to be in that position again, even knowing what I know now.

  7. 1: At work are you a lone-wolf or a team player? I have always worked as a lone-wolf, doctor to patient.
2: Do you view "feedback" as useful guidance or needless meddling? I am continually looking for feedback to improve myself.
3: In a 15 second elevator conversation, how to do describe the work you do (or are retired from)? I say I am a shrink, and watch the reaction.
4: Do you take scheduled breaks at work, or do you work through the day pausing only when you need to? My day is quite scheduled.
5: If you were 21 again, and Bill Gates offered to pay you to go to school for a new career, what would you do? A linguist.
