Road Trips

When I was growing up, we didn't travel a lot.  My father was a bee farmer, and summer vacations were out of the question, that was the busiest of busy seasons.  If we went away during the summer it was a quick day trip.  Winter vacations were complicated by four kids in school. But when we did go, it was usually a road trip, a couple of road trips across country from Michigan to Arizona (I went to part of the 1st grade in Phoenix) and a couple of winter trips to Florida.  By the time I was in middle school trips from Michigan to Florida became and annual event.  A two plus day road trip.  Travel opened my eyes.  I liked seeing new things and places, I loathed long days of pushing onward.

As an adult, I enjoy a road trip, I have been known to put in the occasional 14 hour day, but for the most part I break road trips into shorter days, with planned and unplanned stops along the way.  You get a real feel for the diversity of American geography, topography and culture driving across it.  I am looking forward to a road trip in Germany later this year

  1. I smiled when you said your father was a bee farmer - because there are presently so many bees trying to nest around my house. This morning I said "I seem to be the keeper of the bees."

I love road trips, but hadn't been on one in a long time - - until my recent move from Texas to Tennessee. It was very enjoyable, despite the fact that I had my THREE cats with me.

  3. I love road trips but we did none when I was a kid. Bill and I did a few when we first got together and now in the last few years we have traveled south to his hometown in Georgia. Now I'm trying to catch up before times runs out. (smile)
